GALLERY - MINI BREAK TO GALWAY - DAY 4 - WEDNESDAY, 17TH SEPTEMBER 2014 |
Back to Gallery (top page) |
Full day visit to Inis Mor, the largest of the Aran Islands, travelling along the south of the Galway Bay to Rossaveal where we took a ferry to Kilronan. The ferry was much smaller than the one that brought us across to Dublin but it was big enough to ensure that the crossing was smooth. At Kilronan we split into 2 mini-buses and were given a tour around the island. We saw the ruins of many houses (the population is now less than 900) and early Christian churches & monasteries. We stopped for lunch at the centre for Dun Aengus, a 3000+ year-old stone fort. Most of us walked up the hill to the fort and were stunned at how bleak it was there. We returned to Kilronan for a bit of shopping (and tea) before catching the ferry back across the sea and returning to Galway.
